THE BIG PICTURE
Improving sport coaching practices will not only improve athlete experiences and performance,
but also health and wellness in the US population.
THE
STATE
OF
COACHING
As sport science has evolved and continues to evolve, society is placing additional pressure on coaches to be essentially all things to all athletes. Most coaches do not have the necessary knowledge and skill competencies in order to do this safely and appropriately and society seems to have moved away from a developmental focus to a performance and outcome focus in sport at all levels. However, this is not solely the coaches' fault; despite the critical role that many coaches play in athletes' lives, the system in most sport organizations is not set up to help support coaches in developing or to encourage and value coaches' use of research-informed best practices.
